A quartet of Volkswagen vehicles has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest rating, Top Safety Pick Plus. Receiving the honor are the 2016 Golf 4-door, Golf SportWagen, Golf GTI 4-door and Jetta when the cars are equipped with an optional forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking.

The IIHS safety designation requires that vehicles meet all Top Safety Pick criteria, including ratings of good in moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints crashworthiness tests, and at least an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test; vehicles must also have a front crash prevention system that receives an advanced or superior rating.
The 2016 model year will be the first time any of the members of this lineup has earned the Top Safety Pick Plus designation. For the previous model year, the vehicles were rated basic in front crash prevention, earning Top Safety Pick only.
While the 2016 models have standard automatic post-collision braking, they must be equipped with the optional Driver Assistance Package to include forward collision warning to fall under this award. That package also comes with adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, park distance control and park assist. The optional Driver Assistance Package costs $1,495 on all three Golf models. The Driver Assistance Package for the Jetta costs $950 but only includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking.
All four cars are set to arrive in dealerships this month. Pricing has not yet been announced for any of the four, but the 2015 Golf 4-door started at $21,815, the SportWagen at $22,215, the GTI 4-door at $26,205 and the Jetta at $17,035; all prices include an $820 destination charge.
