The 2016 Honda Civic Four-Door, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, and Lexus RX just received Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Both the Sonata and Altima improved from “Acceptable” to “Good” in the small overlap crash test this year. The RX crossover wasn’t rated for the small overlap test last year, but for 2016, scored “Good” in this category. Meanwhile, the Civic maintained its “Good” rating in the small overlap from last year.
For 2016, IIHS has made stricter requirements for its TSP+ award. Vehicles who earn the most prestigious award from the agency must now earn “Good” ratings in each of five crash tests and earn an “Advanced” or “Superior” score in front crash prevention technology. The Civic sedan, Sonata, Altima, and RX each offer forward collision warning and emergency autobrake, and earned top ratings of “Superior” in front crash prevention.
Before these vehicles were crowned TSP+ winners, the agency had already given the award to 48 other vehicles for the 2016 model year. IIHS has also made changes to its standard TSP award, requiring vehicles to earn a “Good” rating in the small overlap test for 2016. Meanwhile, the government is looking to make changes to its 5-Star safety rating system.
