The SUVs and Trucks of the 2016 Detroit Auto Show

The 2016 Detroit Auto Show hosted a number of exciting debuts: from brand-new models to subtle refreshes, automakers brought their A game. We take a look at the newest SUVs, crossovers, and pickups announced this year in Detroit. Tell us about your favorite in the comments below.

2017 Honda Ridgeline

After taking a few years off, the Honda Ridgeline will be back as a 2017 model. Close ties with the three-row Pilot mean the pickup shares more than just styling cues. We expect the Ridgeline’s direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 to match the Pilot’s 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The Pilot’s all-wheel drive system and torque vectoring also make an appearance.

The 2017 Honda Ridgeline retains the innovative tailgate of the first generation, while the interior is vaunted as best in class for roominess. Though the previous truck was a resounding sales success, we expect the new Ridgeline to combine ride comfort and practicality in the same way. With a more traditional cab-and-bed appearance, the Ridgeline looks a lot more like a “real truck,” but only time will tell if it sells like one.

2016 Infiniti QX60

Infiniti rolls out a subtle refresh for the three-row QX60, with tweaks here and there across the interior and exterior. Revisions to the headlights and taillights update the crossover styling, and attention to small details (like new flush-mounted sonar sensors) clean up the look.

Inside the interior doesn’t change appreciably, though soft-touch materials and contrast stitching dress up the upper instrument panel and gear selector. The 2016 Infiniti QX60 also gets revisions to the suspension and steering, which are said to reduce body roll, smooth out the ride, and make the steering more responsive.

Audi Q6 H-Tron Concept

Audi H Tron Quattro Concept front three quarter

The Audi Q6 H-Tron is said to be a technology study, a proof of concept, at this point. Audi says that the three hydrogen tanks could provide a 373-mile range, and only take 4 minutes to refuel, which makes a compelling case when compared to the nearly-identical E-Tron concept crossover, which only has a 310-mile range and a much longer “refueling” time.

Styling of the Q6 H-Tron is expected to preview a forthcoming model that will site between the Q7 and Q5. A 0-62 mph run is said to take less than 7 seconds.

2016 BMW X4 M40i

2016 BMW X4 M40i front three quarter

The BMW M2 has been stealing the spotlight (as it should), though the new 2016 X4 M40i “Sports Activity Coupe” promises a bit more excitement than the average crossover. With an engine developed by the M division, the X4 M40i will produce 355 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque from its inline-six. That’s good for a manufacturer estimated 4.7-second 0-60 mph run.

The X4 M40i has all of the right parts for a performance model, such as Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, xDrive all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission. How do they stack up? The X6M is quite the big brother, but if the X4 M40i has even half the bravado, it’ll be one fun, but funky, “coupe.”

2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew

2017 Ford F 150 Raptor SuperCrew front three quarter 01

Last year Ford introduced the 2017 F-150 Raptor SuperCab, and this year they’ve added the F-150 Raptor SuperCrew. With a 12-inch longer wheelbase, all of which is said to go to increasing cabin room for rear-seat passengers. Need more room for people, cargo, and gear but don’t want to sacrifice off-road capability? The Raptor SuperCrew is the way to go.

Ford’s flagship off-road pickup will use a second-generation twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 backed by a 10-speed automatic, which is said to produce 450 hp. We expect it to produce more torque than the previous truck’s V-8, which laid down 434 lb-ft. More power, more torque, and as much as 500 pounds of weight loss over the first-generation Raptor should all add up to a faster, more capable truck.

Jeep 75th Anniversary Special Editions

Jeep is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and will commemorate the occasion by introducing special-edition models of its entire lineup. The changes are primarily cosmetic, with low-gloss bronze wheels, unique badging, and a generous standard features list for each model.

The special edition models are available in a variety of colors, including a few shades of green: the Wrangler gets Sarge Green; the Renegade gets Jungle Green; and the others get Recon Green.

2017 GMC Acadia

2017 GMC Acadia front three quarter

Big changes have come for GMC’s 2017 Acadia crossover, most notably in its footprint. It’s 7.2 inches shorter in length, 3.5 inches skinnier, 3.9 inches shorter in height, and nearly 700 pounds lighter. GMC says the newly midsized Acadia will slot between the compact Terrain and full-size Yukon. While the new platform hasn’t been announced, we suspect it’s the new Chi architecture, which will also underpin the upcoming Cadillac XT5.

The all-new 2017 GMC Acadia sports a sleek new look, matching the exterior with the generous and high-tech offerings on the crossover. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will also be included, as will state-of-the-art safety technology, such as automatic emergency braking and a surround vision camera system.

Nissan Titan Warrior Concept

Are we looking at the styling direction for a possible Nissan Titan XD Pro4X? Nissan says it’s just a design study concept, but we like it. The Nissan Titan Warrior Concept combines off-road modified suspension with a wider body (3 inches wider on each side) and styling elements they call “modern armor.”

The Cummins turbodiesel 5.0-liter V-8 is the same engine found under the hood of the production Titan XD. The interior features carbon-colored high-strength fabric, lots of carbon fiber, chrome, leather, and lots of “Magma” orange accent stitching.

Kia Telluride Concept

Kia took a Sorento chassis and stretched the wheelbase 11.9 inches to underpin the Telluride concept. Kia says the flagship-sized SUV is “purely conceptual,” though with their history of bringing concept cars to life they assure us, “You can bet we will be closely monitoring the response to this vehicle.” The concept sports a hybrid powertrain with a 270-hp 3.5-liter V-6, a 130-hp electric motor, and all-wheel drive for a total of 400 combined hp.

Fittingly, for a concept car, the Telluride has a full complement of impressive/bizarre technology, which includes sensors to monitor vital health information of passengers, Light Emitted Rejuvenation (therapeutic lights intended to treat jetlag and enhance energy levels), and a Swipe Command system for second-row passengers to select media.

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept front three quarters

Volkswagen’s renewed fervor for hybrid vehicles has spawned more than a few promising plug-in models, which all seem to share the GTE name. The Golf GTE was a pleasant surprise, and we imagine the Tiguan GTE will be more of the same. The promised specifications seem to indicate a Tiguan that doesn’t just look the part for off-roading but delivers improved fuel economy. With a total system output of 221 hp, a 70 mph top speed in all-electric mode, 20 miles of gas-free range, and a 580-mile total range, the Tiguan promises quite a lot.

The Tiguan GTE Active Concept also boasts driving modes for nearly every conceivable situation: GTE (sporty driving), E (all-electric), on-road (Comfort or Eco), off-road (Rocks, Sludge & Sand, or Gravel), Sport, Snow, Charge (battery charges while driving), and Battery Hold (maintains a constant battery charge). To top it off, when in hybrid mode you can dial up different levels of regenerative braking. Inside the concept there’s a massive touchscreen, all of the latest active safety technology and branded infotainment-replacement systems (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, etc).

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

So, it’s not a crossover or a truck, but the new Chrysler Pacifica is a big deal. The new plug-in Hybrid version is said to get 80 mpge and can travel 30 miles without using a drop of fuel. By the numbers and the spec chart, the Pacifica is promising: 37 firsts for the segment; 100 safety features; all-wheel drive; a 200-pound weight loss; and best in class fuel economy, ride, and handling. All that in a sleek new package that looks even better in person. It’ll replace both the Dodge and Chrysler variants of the previous van, so it sounds like it’s actually time to say goodbye to the Grand Caravan.
