Hybrid midsize sedan competitors can't match it. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is EPA rated at 42 mpg combined, the Kia Optima Hybrid at 38 mpg combined and the Toyota Camry Hybrid at 41 mpg combined.
The Malibu hybrid borrows some powertrain components from the new 2016 Chevrolet Volt, including its two-mode drive system, regenerative brakes, auxiliary power unit and electric air conditioning. Power comes from a combination of a 1.8-liter engine, electric motors and a 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Chevy says the battery can power the Malibu Hybrid up to 53 miles per hour on electricity alone.
The 2016 Malibu Hybrid starts at $28,645 and is based on the LT trim. The Fusion Hybrid starts at $26,550, the Optima Hybrid at $26,845 and the Camry Hybrid at $27,625; all prices include destination. The 2016 Malibu will be at dealerships later this spring.
