Often known as the purist’s Porsche, the 911 R made its grand debut in Geneva earlier this month. But of course, the first 911 R was built way back in 1967 to aid the company’s racing efforts. Now, Porsche has released a new video showing both cars tearing up mountain roads.
The 2016 Porsche 911 R packs a 4.0-liter flat-six engine just like the GT3 RS. Delivering 500 hp, the R is estimated to hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top track speed of 200 mph. The sole transmission choice on the 911 R is a six-speed manual.
In the video, Porsche helps us travel back 50 years, when the 911 R was born. Its race engine packed just 210 hp and helped the car achieve a 0-62 time of 5.9 seconds, Porsche claims.
Porsche will make 991 copies of the new R model worldwide. But the company only made 23 copies of the original, so it’s a rare treat to see one in action.
