We’ve seen the automotive industry progress over the last 100 years, and today BMW showed us its vision for the future with the Vision Next 100 concept. But for today’s Thread of the Day, we want to know what you think cars will look like 100 years from now.

Looking back 100 years, the Ford Model T dominated the automobile market, alternatives to hand-crank starters were just being introduced, and electric vehicles occupied a niche that wouldn’t get off the ground until the next century. Larger engines were beginning to be implemented, but horsepower numbers were still in the low double-digits.

Fast-forward to the present, and the industry has produced 1,000-plus-hp hypercars, engines are now being downsized to improve fuel efficiency, and electric vehicles are getting more popular. Though the last 100 years have definitely given us improvements in safety and performance, what might the future hold for the automobile?

Autonomous vehicles appear to be the next automotive frontier, with vast arrays of sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication promising to severely decrease the chances of an accident. Meanwhile, new propulsion options like hydrogen and all-electric drivetrains are becoming increasingly more viable. However, the game could change over the next 100 years.
