2016 BMW X1 Earns IIHS TSP+ Award

The 2016 BMW X1 has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The fully redesigned small crossover earned “Good” marks in all five crash categories, including the difficult small overlap test. For 2015, the BMW X1 scored only “Marginal” in this category because the dummy’s right foot became trapped in the footwell during the tests.

Another big improvement over the previous model is a stronger front crash prevention score. The new X1 scores an “Advanced” rating, one notch below the top rating of “Superior.” In addition to forward collision warning, the X1 offers automatic braking technology. During testing, the X1 was found capable of reducing the speed of an impact by 10 mph when traveling at 12 mph and by 7 mph while traveling from 25 mph.

For the new model year, the BMW X1 features a new look, improved efficiency, and a more rigid front axle.  BMW has also trimmed the lineup significantly. The only model available this year is the X1 xDrive28i, which brings a 2.0-liter twin-turbo inline-four with 228 hp, making it less powerful than the comparable outgoing version.
