This ’66 Dodge Dart Is Nothing Like the One Your Grandma Drove

1966 Dodge D/Dart

-

For most people, a ’66 Dodge Dart is not what pops to mind when they think of a race car. But of the hundreds of thousands of mostly mundane Darts that plied the streets in the 1960s, this 1966 Dodge D/Dart is one of a tiny fraction that was built for track duty.

-

The D/Dart was a stripped-down version of the standard Dart GT, but Dodge took the Dart’s optional 273-cubic-inch V-8 and gave it more juice. The D/Dart’s V-8 made 275 horsepower, which flowed to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Only 50 examples were produced, specifically for the task of tackling drag strips.

At some point, however, this particular D/Dart was plucked from its drag-racing roots and transformed into a road-racing special. Modifications include a largely stripped-out interior, roll cage, period-correct racing seat, fuel cell, updated ignition system, racing slicks, and disc brakes. The car’s racing history is unclear, but the seller claims mileage sits at just 537.

This Dart was previously listed on eBay in November of 2014, where bidding reached $15,000—not enough to meet the seller’s reserve price. While we’re surprised that bidding didn’t go higher, the seller’s current $36,995 asking price seems a little rich for a modified D/Dart with limited history. Nonetheless, we hope someone picks it up; we’d love to see this thing ripping around a racetrack.
