Goes Like Hell! Rumor Has it Dodge Will Make a Dart GLH

Dodge Dart R/T Mopar concept

Back in the 1980s, Carroll Shelby famously had a hand in Chrysler’s hopped-up Dodge Omnis that, according to their acronym, Went Like Hell. (And then his shop took point in assembling the follow-up Omni GLHS, which stood for “Goes Like Hell Some-more.”) Now, rumor has it Dodge wants to revive the GLH badge for a hot-rod version of the Dart compact sedan. And we’re actually excited at the thought.

Motor Authority reports that attendees of Fiat-Chrysler’s dealer meeting in Las Vegas were teased with the notion of a Dodge Dart GLH package (as well as a Hellcatted Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Dodge Barracuda convertible). According to attendees of the closed-door, no-phones-allowed annual product preview, the GLH would pack a hotter turbocharged engine and other performance enhancements (along the lines of the Dart R/T concept, shown above). Folks who attended the meeting said that the GLH upgrade would be available across all Dart trim levels, with pricing starting under $20,000.

This sounds as if it’s perhaps separate from the 2017 Dodge Dart SRT we first heard about last year. At that time, we were promised an all-wheel-drive, SRT-ified Dart cranking out something more than 300 horses and “at least 300 lb-ft of torque.” Such a Dart would definitely go toe-to-toe with the all-wheel-drive, 345-hp Ford Focus RS, but there’s no way Dodge could offer such a car at the rumored GLH pricing.

So where does that leave us? It sounds like the GLH will be a midpack performance model, offering a bit more horsepower at a bargain price, while the rumored SRT would be the all-out muscle machine. Of course, this could all just be gossip: Like Dodge’s 1980s hot hatch, rumors and speculation also tend to Go Like Hell.
