June's Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Cars

Summer is here yet car shoppers are still quick to snap up cars, trucks and SUVs with all-wheel drive. All but one of the 18 fastest-selling cars in June had standard or available all-wheel drive and all but three of those were SUVs or trucks. Not surprisingly Subaru dominates the list with five models all with standard all-wheel drive. That's up from four last month, but the brand is well represented historically on our fastest list. Related: Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: June 2015 Last month's top spot went to an all-new Honda SUV, the small HR-V, and this month's top spot goes to an all-new Honda SUV, the larger Pilot, redesigned for 2016. It took just five days to sell the new three-row crossover versus an average of 62 days for all cars. That number is up versus May's 57 days but down from June 2014's 64 days, meaning people are buying new cars at a more rapid rate. What shoppers aren't interested in, it seems, are the country's most affordable vehicles. Basic transportation needs don't translate into hot commodities as sub-$15,000 cars like the Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Rio were all bottom dwellers on our slowest-selling list at 150, 153 and 157 days respectively. And while it didn't make the cut for slowest-seller status, the most affordable car in the country last year, Mitsubishi's Mirage, is one of our picks for shoppers to take a look at if a deal is important to them. It took 117 days to sell one in June, meaning there might be a deal to be had on a car that stickers at $13,805 including destination. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. With lots mostly clear of 2014 models, we look exclusively at 2015s and 2016s. For the fastest sellers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. To highlight all slow sellers, slowest sellers have no such threshold. Our Picks highlight cars that take a significant time before they're sold and might be overlooked by shoppers. Dealers could be more motivated to sell these cars.
