With the advent of electronic doodadery, anything can be anything. Witness the BMW X6 M, a “Sports Activity Coupe” that is neither fish nor Formosa. Though it weighs about as much as the latter, it still punts itself to 60 in under four seconds. Mercedes-Benz will sell you a Geländewagen with summer performance rubber. And farther down the cash-dollars food chain, Ford has now opted to add a “sport” mode to the F-150.

In 2016 F-150s, a double dab of the “tow/haul” button will light up an amber “S” on the face of the tach, adjust the throttle to offer more torque with a shallower push of the pedal, and hold gears longer for maximum performance. The Blue Oval claims it’s “a bit of Mustang DNA in the F-150.” Automated rev-matching on downshift with the six-speed automatic transmission was developed for Ford’s ponycar and ported to the pickups.

The new mode is standard on all models, regardless of engine choice, and can be selected in two-wheel drive, 4WD automatic, and 4WD high settings. We predict that down the road, there will be a two-tap pause between “Merle, hold my beer!” and the summary mayhem that invariably follows such a request.
