Jaguar Land Rover Teams Up With LISNR to Control Vehicles With Sound

Jaguar Land Rover Tech Incubator is teaming up with LISNR, a company developing technology to transmit data through sound, to change the way vehicles interact with their occupants and the surrounding world.

LISNR uses what it calls “Smart Tones,” or sounds outside the range of human hearing, to send data between devices. If a car has LISNR technology, it can communicate with mobile devices, other cars or anything in the surrounding area that also uses Smart Tones.

Jaguar Land Rover and LISNR are using this technology to improve the interior environment for each passenger in the car. LISNR can tell which individual is the driver or passenger and alter the car’s settings to suit their preferences. This includes seat personalization. For example, LISNR can tell the car how to adjust the seat or climate control based on the settings on the occupant’s cell phone.

JLR has a mobile phone application that can connect with their vehicles via Bluetooth or WiFi. Once this connection has been made, users can begin customizing the car to their specifications via Sound Tones through their mobile devices.

“We are looking for and investing in technologies that improve in-car connectivity and bring cars, devices and their users closer together,” said Danielle Alexander, Jaguar Land Rover Tech Incubator general manager, in a statement.

“LISNR is one of the most compelling technologies we’ve seen in this space, and we believe working with them will bring us closer to our goals of complete car and device connectivity.”

JLR and LISNR hope their partnership will help bridge the gap between cars, occupants, and devices. They cite IT, retail, financial services, media, and consumer electronics as areas where ultrasonic communication can play a role in changing the playing field.

LISNR says this technology is ready for in-vehicle testing and a commercial launch. There is no word of how soon it will be available on the market.
