Which Midsize SUVs Have the Most Cargo Room?

Midsize SUVs are designed with busy families in mind, with roomy seating for five (and, in many cases, not-so-roomy seating for seven), as well as plenty of luggage space. Most SUVs in this class are comfortable for passengers, but not all accommodate as much cargo as we’d like. Here are the five midsizers that offer the most room for your stuff—as measured with second (and third) row seats up for passengers, and also folded down flat.

5th Place: GMC Acadia

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 79.0 cubic feet
  • Behind 2nd row: 41.7 cubic feet
  • Behind 3rd row: 12.8 cubic feet
  • Base price: $29,070

The GMC Acadia is the newest vehicle on this list, with the latest version freshly introduced for the 2017 model year.

Smaller, but still big

The Acadia has been downsized from the previous eight-seat version; the smaller, svelter seven-seat Acadia weighs 740 pounds less than its predecessor.

Motor Trend‘s Take

We’ve been favorably impressed by the GMC Acadia, which is light, comfortable, agile, and classy.

4th Place: Hyundai Santa Fe

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 80.0 cubic feet
  • Behind 2nd row: 40.9 cubic feet
  • Behind 3rd row: 13.5 cubic feet
  • Base price: $30,800

The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s three-row crossover; don’t confuse it with the Santa Fe Sport, which has just two rows of seats and less luggage capacity.

Business class

Not only does the Santa Fe offer lots of cargo space, it also offers plenty of room for passengers.

Motor Trend’s Take

The Santa Fe is quiet and roomy, and we love its infotainment system, but the sloppy driving dynamics really turn us off.

3rd Place: Toyota Highlander

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 83.7 cubic feet
  • Behind 2nd row: 42.3 cubic feet
  • Behind 3rd row: 13.8 cubic feet
  • Base price: $30,630

Toyota’s midsize crossover is the cargo-space champ, with 10 cubic feet more space than the fifth place Kia Sorento.

Strong on safety

The Highlander is aimed at the heart of the family-SUV market. Many advanced active safety features that are optional on rival SUVs come standard on the Highlander.

Motor Trend’s Take

The Highlander presents great packaging with a nicely finished interior, comfortable ride, and surprisingly good driving experience.

2nd Place: Honda Pilot

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 83.9 cubic feet
  • Behind 2nd row: 46.8 cubic feet
  • Behind 3rd row: 16.5 cubic feet
  • Base price: $30,595

The Honda Pilot emphasizes passenger room, with seating for up to eight people—however, it still has plenty of cargo space on offer.

A Flexible Interior

The Pilot’s cabin is reminiscent of a minivan, with rear seats that are easy to fold away and handy hidden storage beneath the cargo bay floor.

 Motor Trend’s Take

The Pilot is one of the quickest full-size SUVs we’ve tested—the Elite trim gets to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds—though our nine-speed automatic has misbehaved with clunky shifting.

1st Place: Toyota 4Runner

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 89.7 cubic feet
  • Behind 2nd row: 47.2 cubic feet
  • Behind 3rd row: 9.0 cubic feet
  • Base price: $34,210

The 4Runner is the last of the old-school SUVs, with truck-based body-on-frame construction for superior off-road abilities.

More size means more space

The 4Runner is a bit bigger than most midsize crossovers, and the benefit is lots of cargo room. The optional “slide deck” sliding cargo floor reduces maximum cargo capacity but not enough to bump the 4Runner out of first place.

Motor Trend’s Take

The 4Runner is a truck at heart, unlike the other car-based crossovers on this list, and as a result it drives accordingly, with a bit rougher ride to offset its into-the-wilderness skill set.
