I’m fairly convinced carmakers groaned a collective grunt of sadness when FCA released the 707-hp Hellcat for $65,000. However, I think all that power for not so much money hit brands like Lamborghini the hardest—even if they will never admit it. Yes, 650 hp in the Urus is a huge amount of power for an SUV, but Jeep will sell you the Trackhawk with 57 extra ponies for way less. Not that anyone is cross-shopping the two, but in some auto-zeitgeist way, the Jeep hurts the Lambo.
Thing is, this is just step one for the Urus, which, as we found out in our prototype First Drive, is already pretty darn good in base form. Yeah, of course, in a few years there will be an Urus S (though I’d suggest a better name), which will have more power and a few other tweaks. However, Lamborghini let slip that there might actually be something more akin to an Urus Performante. Why? For one, never forget, Lambo holds the patent to ALA, their trick super-slick aero-vectoring system. Might as well get some use out of it.
As for reason two, if I wanted to establish my SUV as the dominant predator on the planet, I’d for sure whip up an ALA-enabled, lightened, R-compounded, louder, crazier-looking, and (of course) more powerful version, then go set some ridiculous lap time on the Nürburgring, not only becoming the quickest SUV extant but also embarrassing a bunch of supercars along the way. Wouldn’t you? Watch this space.
