Not unusual for a pickup, the Ram 1500 gets a full redesign nearly a decade after the previous model debuted. Given how long it has been and how important the Ram truck is to Fiat Chrysler’s lineup, the automaker deployed big changes for the new model year, including mild hybrid technology, a new frame with 98 percent high-strength steel, increased payload, and improved aerodynamics. The truck also receives a brand new design inside and out, although that means losing much of its signature look. Is it worth redefining the truck in the name of added refinement? We explore the design changes on the 2019 Ram 1500 below.
The Ram ditches the gaping grille of its predecessor for a sleeker design. And instead of the traditional emblem, the new 1500 spells out the word “Ram” in the center of the grille. Headlights are integrated especially well into the design of the grille on the Limited model, and the lower valence area has become more complex. The new raised aluminum hood directs air away from the wipers, increasing aerodynamics. Notice there’s a new badge on the side of the hood, as well.
Living up to the full-size truck name, the Ram 1500 has grown. From the side, you may notice the cab body is 4 inches longer. Width has increased by half an inch, while the bed is 1.5 inches higher now. Ram pushed the B- and C-pillars back an inch, and the rear of the cab was moved an additional 2 inches. That means the front and rear doors are an inch larger on Crew Cab models, and Quad Cab models lose an inch from the rear door, compared to the old Ram, the automaker says. More noticeably, a simplified logo adorns the side of the body right behind the front wheel. On the Limited model pictured, the arrangement of silver trim has changed.
In the rear, look for redesigned taillamps and a new bumper. The bumper includes a larger stepping pad on the corners and boasts a lower step-in-height in the center.
Open the doors, and you’re immediately greeted with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, at least on certain versions. The biggest screen offered on the previous Ram 1500 was a 8.4-inch touch unit. In the new Ram, you’ll also find a redesigned glove box and cupholders. The center stack has been raised to bring it closer to the driver.
Like the previous version, the new Ram 1500 also offers a beefier Rebel version. Many of the updates reflect changes we see on the rest of the Ram lineup, including the new headlamps, hood, and bumpers.
