A Porsche 911 GT2 RS Beat the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s ‘Ring Time

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is quick. Extremely quick. In fact, it’s the quickest production car to ever lap the Nürburgring. But the good news for Porsche fans is, the German automaker has figured out a way to make the 911 GT2 RS quick enough to beat the SVJ.

Today, Porsche announced that it set a new Nürburgring lap record with a 911 GT2 RS. Except it wasn’t stock. The record was set by a car that had been modified by Porsche motorsports partner Manthey-Racing to lay down a lap time of 6:40.3—nearly 5 seconds quicker than the Aventador SVJ. Since the specially modified car, called the 911 GT2 RS MR, is still street-legal, Porsche is touting it as the quickest road-legal car to lap the ‘Ring.

“We kept our eye on the weather all day and thought hard about whether such a drive was possible. We would not have taken any risks if it was raining or if the track was slightly damp,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s head of motorsports and GT cars, in a statement. “In this test drive, we simply wanted to assess the potential of the vehicle once more. The result is quite impressive. It really is a fabulous time. This shows again very clearly the exciting possibilities of this sports car.”

Porsche didn’t go into detail explaining what exact changes were made to the car, but it did say engineers focused on the chassis and aerodynamics. The automaker also said its engineers have learned a lot from campaigning the 911 RSR and GT3 R race cars in the past year, especially at the Nürburgring with Manthey-Racing. That firm, which is 51 percent owned by Porsche, says it will sell the parts as a track-focused (but street-legal) kit to customers in Europe and other markets. But now for the bad news: Porsche says it currently has no plans to sell the parts in the U.S.

Given that this particular Porsche was modified beyond what would normally be available from the factory, the SVJ’s production car record should be safe. Still, the tuned GT2’s Nürburgring run is impressive to watch. Check out the in-car footage of the record-setting lap in the video below
