BMW M8 Coupe Will Deliver More Than 600 HP

BMW is conducting final tests on the M8 coupe before it heads to series production. The automaker has revealed that the car will pack more than 600 hp from its twin-turbocharged V-8 engine.

The potent flagship is now undergoing testing at the Estoril grand prix racing circuit in Portugal. Being an M model, of course, the sport coupe will benefit from special suspension tuning. It will also have an M-tuned rear-biased all-wheel-drive system with a full rear-wheel-drive mode. The standard 8 Series is already plenty powerful, packing a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 good for 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. But now that we know the M8 will make more than 600 hp, it’s possible the M variant could borrow the twin-turbo 4.4-liter from the M5 Competition, which makes 617 hp.

The BMW M8 will launch globally next year. BMW has already detailed the standard 8 Series coupe and convertible. The coupe goes on sale in the U.S. in December with the convertible to follow in the new year. Prices start at $112,895 for the coupe and $122,395 for the convertible.

More M variants are in the cards, too. An M8 Gran Coupe previewed by a concept shown earlier this year is on the way, in addition to an M8 convertible. Assuming the M model is even more focused than the already impressive 2019 BMW M850i xDrive we drove recently, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
