If you’re going to drive on harsh terrain, few vehicles are better than a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. But off-road driving is an art, and Mercedes wants to show us how it’s done.
In this video Mercedes posted to YouTube, we learn how to drive through some pretty gnarly mud. Guiding us through the process is Jessi Combs, professional driver and automotive fabricator best known for her work on Velocity shows Overhaulin’ and All Girls Garage.
Redesigned for 2019, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is even more off-road-ready than before. As we noted in our First Drive, there is a more user-friendly differential system, now including “at-ready” pre-lock lights that inform the driver the selected diff will automatically lock if needed. Mercedes also added a new G-Mode that adjusts the suspension damping, throttle, and steering for improved off-roading when low-range is selected or the center diff is locked. The G-Wagen’s fording depth has also increased to 27.6 inches.
The new G-Class offers two different 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engines. The standard mill makes 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, and the AMG version boosts output to 577 hp and 627 lb-ft.
Watch the video below to find out how the G-Class tackles mud.
