2019 Infiniti QX50 Long Term Update 3: Dealership Trip

This month my Infiniti QX50 long-termer crossed the 7,500-mile mark, which meant it was time for its first service. There was no missing it, either, since the instrument cluster began displaying an impossible-to-miss reminder once the odometer rolled past 7,250 miles. Most new cars do that these days, but it was still a nice touch.

A quick Google search showed that Infiniti of South Bay was the closest dealer, so I figured I’d give them a shot. Thanks to Infiniti’s online service appointment tool, it was easy to schedule an appointment. A lot of dealers now offer online scheduling, but after dealing with independent mechanics who can barely be counted on to answer their phones, it’s still appreciated.

The first service is essentially an oil change and tire rotation, but since the infotainment system has been buggy (more on that next month), I was hoping they’d be able to fix that, too. In theory, I could have asked for a loaner, but why bother? It’s not like the appointment would take more than an hour or two.

Ultimately, it took a little longer than two hours, but the wait really wasn’t bad. All the employees were friendly, the chairs in the waiting area were comfortable, and they had several complimentary snack and drink options to choose from. Even better, the Wi-Fi was fast and reliable enough for me to get some work done. Dealer internet never works.

Two hours, 17 minutes and $106.21 later, I had my car back and was on my way with a to-go cup of coffee in hand. No one actually likes taking their car in for service, but that was about as painless and stress-free an experience as I’d ever had at a dealer. And if you’re going to drop more than $50,000 on a luxury car, you deserve to be treated well.

That said, there was one disappointment. Despite checking the software, the connectors, and taking the car out to see if they could replicate the problem, no one could figure out what was wrong with the infotainment system. So the problem is either more complicated than expected, or there’s an issue with the entire system. Like I said, more on that next month.
