Volkswagen Reveals 296-HP T-Roc R for Geneva

Back in 2014, Volkswagen showed off its latest compact crossover concept, the T-Roc. But despite how popular that segment is in the U.S., Volkswagen also made it clear that the T-Roc won’t be sold here. As our first drive showed, we’re not missing out on much with the bast T-Roc. Thankfully though, the new T-Roc R looks much more interesting to drive.

Instead of the 148-hp engine that powered the one we drove, the T-Roc R gets the Golf R’s 2.0-liter turbo-four tuned to make 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive comes standard, with shifting handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It should be pretty quick, too, launching from 0-62 mph in a claimed 4.9 seconds.

The T-Roc R also comes with a lowered suspension, larger brakes, 18-inch wheels (19s are optional), and a sportier appearance package. When you really want to have fun, there’s a race mode, and stability control can be turned off. Oh, and you can’t forget the R badges scattered throughout the cabin or the stainless steel pedals.

Even though the T-Roc R won’t come to the U.S., it’s still nice to see VW offering more true R models. We’re always happy to see cars get more power even if they don’t come Stateside. Unfortunately for our European readers, Volkswagen didn’t say anything about pricing or an on-sale date. Hopefully, we’ll get more info at the official reveal in Geneva next month.
