Hot on the heels of setting the production car lap record at Road Atlanta, Porsche has done it again at another famous road course: Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The record was captured by none other than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which ran the 4-mile track in 2:15.17 minutes. Though our own Randy Pobst was behind the wheel for the record attempt at Road Atlanta, this time Daytona and Le Mans class-winner David Donohue piloted the GT2 RS to the record.
Interestingly, Donohue set his fastest lap on only his second time out. Porsche also had a GT3 RS on hand, and though it didn’t break any records at this track, it did post an impressive 2:18.57 minutes. Just as they did at Road Atlanta, both cars ran street-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tires. The runs were verified by Racelogic personnel, who were on site to monitor lap times and vehicle telemetry. But perhaps most importantly, the laps were recorded for our enjoyment by a Racelogic Vbox Video HD2 system. Check out the video to see the 911 GT2 RS fly through the course.
It comes as no surprise to us that the GT2 RS has captured so many records. After all, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS shattered the lap records at both Willow Springs International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca last year. But will it try again for ultimate bragging rights at the Nurburgring? Technically, a GT2 RS has already dethroned the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s record-setting time, but that car had special track goodies from Porsche motorsports partner Manthey-Racing. We know we’ve only just seen the 992-generation 911, but we’re looking forward to the eventual GT2 variant and all the broken records that will presumably come with it.
