Finally, Chevrolet will debut its much anticipated mid-engine Corvette on July 18. While we wait, the automaker has released a new video previewing the sweet sound of that exhaust.
“Take a short thrill ride to get a sneak peek of what’s going to happen on 07.18.19,” Chevrolet teases in the YouTube description. “You won’t believe your eyes—or ears.”
In the video, the history of the Corvette flashes before our eyes, with Zora Arkus-Duntov strapping into a Corvette prototype. Then, we see the C8 Corvette running down the track from the perspective of the driver, with numbers overlaying the view. The video finishes with the same “7.18.19,” which we have seen many times before to indicate the reveal date. But never have we seen it in this context. Could the number hint at a new Nurburgring lap record?
It’s possible, but we’re not so sure. If the new Corvette achieved a 7:18.19 time at the Nurburgring, it would be slower than a Camaro ZL1 1LE, which clocked a time of 7:16.04. The time could be appropriate for a base Corvette, though, since it may make significantly less power than the ZL1 1LE’s 650 ponies. There are several numbers that flash on the screen but none of them seem likely for a mid-engine sports car.
What do you think? Watch the first video below to see the Corvette tear up the track, and check out the one below that to see it pull up to the National Corvette Museum.
