2016 Mini Clubman Cooper: Price and Size Increase

Formerly a quirky three-door hatchback, Mini super-sized its Clubman for 2016, transforming the car with four full-size doors and increasing every exterior dimension. The Clubman took a year off in 2015, but when it was on sale for model-year 2014, the car started at $22,195, including a destination charge. For 2016, the all-new Clubman starts at $24,950; the high-performance Cooper S trim is priced at $28,500 (all prices include a destination charge).

Longer and more wagon-like, the 2016 Clubman compares closely with the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The Golf SportWagen starts at $22,445, though isn't equipped quite as well as the Clubman, which is going for a premium experience with standard dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless ignition and 12-color interior ambient lighting.

Available Clubman packages include Sport, Premium and Technology. Sport packages add 17-inch wheels in silver or black on the base Cooper and 18-inch wheels on the Cooper S along with LED headlights and taillights, and an adjustable sport suspension on both. The Sport Package is $2,000 on the base Clubman and $1,750 on the S, which also includes LED fog lights.

The Premium Package ($1,800 on base and S models) adds a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon stereo and a smart-key entry system with a hands-free opener for the rear split doors. A Technology Package ($1,750) includes a larger media screen with navigation, backup camera and parking sensors.

Mini also offers a Fully Loaded Package that combines the three packages for $5,250 on the base model and $5,000 on the S.

The 2016 Clubman goes on sale in January 2016.
