Nearly 400,000 Ford Mustangs Sold Globally Since 2015 Launch

The Ford Mustang has sold 395,000 units since the current generation arrived for the 2015 model year and went on sale in other global markets. Citing a study by IHS Markit, Ford says that Mustang sales totaled 150,000 units in 2016. Due to increased demand outside of the United States, the Mustang sold 45,000 units in global markets in 2016, leading to an overall sales increase of 6 percent, and a 101-percent increase for sales outside of North America.

Germany and China saw the biggest sales gains for the Mustang outside of the United States but the latter saw an increase of 74 percent improvement in 2016 since the car launched there a year prior. Additionally, the Mustang was also introduced to smaller countries such as Gibraltar and New Caledonia, with six new markets to be added this year. Since its global launch in 2015, Ford has exported 98,000 Mustangs for global markets outside of North America and nearly doubled its export percentage from 17.5 percent from 2015 and 2016 to 30 percent for the 2017 model year. Touting these strong global sales, Ford says the Mustang was “the best-selling sports car in the world” in 2016. Undoubtedly some will take issue with the use of the term “sports car,” but as a sport coupe the Mustang has definitely been successful.

“The legacy of Mustang continues to grow, and in places it never reached before,” said Ford Mustang marketing manager Mark Schaller, in a release. “We continue to make it available in new markets, and drivers in those markets continue to respond with resounding approval.” Before the current-generation Mustang debuted, the car was limited only to the North American market.

For the 2018 model year, the Ford Mustang has been refreshed with a new front fascia, an available 12-inch digital instrument cluster, magnetorheological shocks, an active exhaust and an optional 10-speed automatic replacing the old six-speed unit. For the North American market, the base 3.7-liter V-6 has been discontinued for the 2018 model year, making the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo-four, which has been updated to generate more torque, the new standard powerplant. An updated 5.0-liter V-8 with direct and port injection remains an option.
