Volkswagen’s 10-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has been axed, according to a new report from Automotive News. At last month’s International Vienna Motor Symposium, Volkswagen powertrain chief Friedrich Eichler revealed to AN that development of the new gearbox has been discontinued.
“Two months ago, I had the prototype crushed,” Eichler said.
Originally announced in 2013 by former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn, the 10-speed dual-clutch was designed to handle upwards of 369 lb-ft of torque. Its presentation coincided with other automakers such as General Motors and Ford revealing that they were also developing new multi-speed gearboxes, which include the nine- and 10-speed automatics used in the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor, 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and 2018 GMC Terrain. Winterkorn had praised the new transmission for its wide gear ratio and improved friction reduction, according to AN.
Eichler noted that the transmission was a representation of Volkswagen’s engineering approach before the diesel emissions scandal happened, which he described as “bigger is better.” However, Eichler didn’t rule out the possibility of the 10-speed dual-clutch returning in the future, stating that he’s saved all the testing data before the prototype unit got sent to the crusher. The 10-speed dual-clutch automatic was tipped to help improve fuel economy, but it was never known what models were going to utilize the transmission.
