Acura RDX Prototype Previews Bolder Luxury Crossover

Acura’s best-selling vehicles are SUVs, so it’s important the brand gets its entry-level crossover right. Acura will preview the next-generation RDX with a prototype coming to the Detroit auto show in January.

The model features an angular grille that we’ve seen on other new Acuras, ditching the thick silver bar that runs across the front fascia of the current SUV. A teaser image of the RDX prototype reveals a low-slung body, prominent window spoiler, and bold character lines that accentuate the vehicle’s wheel arches. Its design is based loosely on the sculpted, planted Acura Precision Concept.

Inside, the RDX prototype loses its dual screen setup and gains one large central screen. Acura says the model will receive a completely new user interface and operating system. An electronic gear selector will also likely make its way into the cabin.

Acura says the new RDX will represent the brand’s most extensive redesign in over a decade. It has confirmed the RDX will sit on a new platform exclusive to Acura. Although the automaker hasn’t provided powertrain details, it’s likely to pack a version of the 2.0-liter turbo-four from the 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T.

The Acura RDX Prototype will debut January 15 at the Detroit auto show. In the meantime, read more on what to expect for the next-generation RDX here.
