First 2019 Subaru Ascent SUV Rolls Off the Line

The first copy of the all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent SUV rolled off the assembly line in Layfayette, Indiana. Eiji Ogino, the plant’s vice president, was on hand for the historic moment.

The Ascent will be the largest Subie ever when it goes on sale the middle of this year. The three-row crossover seats seven or eight passengers, depending on trim level, has a 113.8-inch wheelbase, and measures 196.8 inches long and 76 inches wide. Under the hood, all Ascents pack a 2.4-liter turbo flat-four with 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Like the similarly sized Volkswagen Atlas, the Ascent was designed exclusively for the North American market. There’s 153.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and two rows of 60/40 split folding seats, which offer up to 72.6 cubic feet of cargo space when folded flat. If you like to enjoy a beverage while you play on your mobile device, then you’ll be pleased to know the Ascent offers 19 cupholders and up to six USB ports.

Standard goodies include a 6.5-inch touchscreen (an 8.0-inch unit is optional), three-zone auto climate control, an EyeSight Driver Assist System, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent starts at $32,970 and goes on sale in the U.S. and Canada this summer. Subaru says more than 4,500 of the new SUVs have been ordered. If you’re thinking of trading up from your Forester, now is probably a good time to place your order.
