Back in 2011, Hyundai took big risks when it introduced the fifth-generation Elantra. Drawing on its then-new “fluidic sculpture” design language, Hyundai penned a car that was bold, stylish, and even a little polarizing—something you just didn’t see in the safe, predictable compact sedan class. When it released the follow-up six years later, Hyundai went with a more conservative look. The sixth-gen Elantra didn’t challenge the status quo like its predecessor, but it wasn’t boring, either. Apparently, Hyundai thought differently, as it completely revamped the exterior for the model’s midcycle refresh. The look is certainly bolder, but is it better? Read on and judge for yourself.
The biggest changes happen up front. The 2019 Elantra gets sharp, triangular headlights that angle downward all the way into the grille, which is still hexagonal but wider and more open. The headlights feature rows of square-shaped LED projectors and are topped by LED piping that we can only imagine makes for an angry-looking daytime running light signature. Continuing the angular look, the front bumper sports sharp creases at either corner, along with triangular foglights.
Being a midcycle refresh, the 2019 Elantra looks mostly the same from the profile view, still highlighted by a raked roofline, short trunklid with molded spoiler, and narrow greenhouse opening that tapers as the beltline kicks up at the rear quarter window. The 2019 model does get new 15-, 16-, and 17-inch wheel designs, however, including one wheel with a unique split-spoke pattern.
Mirroring the headlights, the taillamps angle downward toward the middle of the trunk. The three-element light signature of the 2017 model is gone, replaced by two parallel LED strips that streak through the housings. Meanwhile, the rear bumper has been reshaped for a more aggressive look from behind.
The changes inside aren’t as drastic, but still noticeable. The center stack has been redesigned, with three large knobs dominating the new HVAC control panel and different switchgear used throughout. The HVAC vents have also been revised with two-tone metallic accents forming rectangular shapes within the vanes. Hyundai says the infotainment system is new, as is a larger optional 8-inch touchscreen. Meanwhile, the dashboard is subtly different with new trim around the vents and a new hood design for the gauge cluster. The gauges themselves have been redesigned, with a new checker pattern on the gauge faces and relocated coolant temp and fuel dials.
If Hyundai was going for polarizing again, it nailed it with the 2019 Elantra. The more angular aesthetic won’t appeal to everybody, but it will draw attention to a product that might otherwise be overlooked in a field that includes solid performers like the Honda Civic and Subaru Impreza.
