2019 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD Momentum Long-Term Arrival: Upscale Minimalism

Crossovers have gained so much popularity across the mainstream and luxury segments that they’re now becoming the volume models for automakers. The compact segment, in particular, has begun to displace the sedan as automakers’ best-sellers. It’s no different at Volvo with the XC60 now gaining footing as one of the Swedish automaker’s most popular vehicles. We’ve got our hands on a 2019 XC60 T5 AWD Momentum for a year to see where this Scandinavian stands.

Underpinned by Volvo’s SPA platform shared with the S60, S90, V60, V90, and the SUV of the Year­–winning XC90, the second-generation XC60 features control-arm suspension up front and integral-link out back with a composite leaf spring. An air suspension with adaptive dampers is optional, but we didn’t opt for it. Our T5 long-termer came with a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. You can also choose a 316-hp 2.0-liter super- and turbocharged I-4 in the T6 or a plug-in hybrid that pairs that super- and turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor for a combined output of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft.

Just because we got the base Momentum trim doesn’t mean we got shafted in terms of features. A panoramic moonroof, dual-zone climate control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, LED headlights, leather upholstery, Bluetooth, and power front seats all come standard. Since it’s a Volvo, our long-term XC60 comes packed with a full suite of active safety tech including automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and the automaker’s own Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system. Other options we selected include a 360-degree camera, a Harman Kardon audio system, navigation with a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 19-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, keyless entry and start, hands-free power tailgate, heated front seats, and an automatic parking system.

When we first reviewed the XC60 T5, we were impressed by its well-built interior and surprisingly agile handling, but we also knocked it for its jittery ride and the base engine’s turbo lag. Just a few days into our long-term test, we’re enjoying the XC60’s serene interior, which is the main highlight. From its solid, reassuring build to its simple yet tasteful design, the XC60’s cabin is a nice place to be, pleasant and spacious. All seats are supremely comfortable, and there’s plenty of space for your gear.

Volvo’s Sensus interface, which originally debuted in the XC90, is also found in the XC60—and it looks just as impressive here as it does in the automaker’s other vehicles. Our long-termer also features a Harman Kardon audio system, which is crisp, clear, and can easily turn your car into a concert hall. A 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is also offered as a stand-alone option to satisfy audiophiles. Along with the 12.3-inch gauge cluster, our XC60’s interior looks properly Scandinavian, minimalistic yet packed with plenty of tech.

With the Volvo XC60’s entry into the long-term fleet, a number of questions will be asked. How will we feel about the interior? Will we still enjoy the awesome audio system? Is the Sensus interface going to make us lose our minds like most infotainment systems from other European automakers? Will the XC60 be a popular road trip vehicle among staff members?
