FCA just loves teasers. Whether it’s the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon or an upcoming SEMA build, as is the case here, you can expect to see at least one teaser, and oftentimes they’ll be pretty cryptic. This latest one is definitely mysterious, but there are a few potentially significant details worth discussing.
The video begins with the camera panning up on a stretch of asphalt. We see a set of glowing red paw prints burned into the ground, which soon get trampled and extinguished by what look like hoof prints of a large animal. A vintage Dodge Charger coupe then pulls up and performs a burnout over both sets of tracks. The video ends with the words, “Something big is coming.”
We’re encouraged to visit cratehemi.com for more details, so it’s safe to assume this video is teasing a new crate engine, likely to debut in the classic Charger we see here. Mopar revealed the Hellcat crate engine at last year’s SEMA Show, so it’s also likely that’s what the glowing paw prints represent. The Hellcat crate engine gets you the same supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 found in the Challenger SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat. In addition, Mopar offers the Hellcrate, which is designed for pre-1976 cars and includes essentials like the engine wiring harness, powertrain control module, fuel pump control module, and various sensors. The Hellcat crate engine offers the same 707 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque it does in its namesake models, but since the control module is unlocked, tuners have the option to squeeze out even more power. But in spite of the Hellcat’s power potential, it seems like Mopar is saying its new crate engine will eclipse its last one.
Our friends at Hot Rod pointed out that the original 426 Hemi V-8 was nicknamed “Elephant,” which is interesting because those sure do look like elephant prints in the video. It’s possible that Mopar is bringing back the name for its next crate engine. We’ll have to wait until the engine debuts on October 30 to find out for sure. Stay tuned.
