The current Ford GT is a fine machine and a serious supercar, but if it’s the original 2005-’06 GT that really gets your check-writing hand itchy, you may consider coming out to Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction later this month. Over the course of a week, Barrett-Jackson will offer a total of eight first-generation Ford GTs for sale (of just over 4,000 ever built) and that kind of volume coupled with no-reserve bidding means that it’s likely at least a couple of the GTs on offer will end up being a minor bargain for the buyer.
Our pick of the bunch is a 2005 Ford GTX-1 Roadster. The GTX-1 was an aftermarket roofless conversion of the original GT, inspired by the GT40 roadster prototype of the 1960s. Built by a third party, but supervised by Ford, just 100 GTX-1 Roadsters were produced and the first one built was shown at the 2005 SEMA show. Sure, the GTX-1 may lose a little torsional rigidity compared to the coupe, but given that most GTs are just used for street cruises anyway, we’d guess the wind-in-the-hair experience (and added intensity of all that 5.4-liter V-8 noise) makes the conversion worthwhile.
If you prefer closed Ford GTs, there are plenty to choose from. If you’re a fan of the Heritage Edition cars, done up in the blue and orange “Gulf”-inspired livery, no fewer than three will cross the block in Scottsdale. Given that we like driving our cars, we’ll take the highest-mileage one, showing 3,092 miles on the odometer. The 335th built of just 343 Heritage Editions ever produced by Ford, this Canadian delivery car retains its original window stickers (one in English and one in French) and has had the airbag recalls performed already. Want a lower-mileage Heritage Edition to just look at? The two other offerings have 75 miles and 288 miles on their odometers, respectively.
If you’re a fan of the red with white stripe paint scheme on a closed GT, Barrett-Jackson will offer two of those: a 2005 with 52 miles to keep in your hermetically sealed garage and a 2006 with 2,746 miles that you could actually drive down to your local 7-11 every now and then.
That leaves just two modified Ford GTs: a 2006 in Tungsten Gray without stripes and 607 miles on the clock and an upgraded supercharger, or a 2005 in white with blue stripes, side scoops, and wheels that has been bumped up to 850 hp. The 2005 car has also been treated to a carbon-fiber rear diffuser, a Euro-style bumper conversion and a reverse clamshell kit, which hinges the rear deck lid (clam shell) at the rear bulkhead.
