Jaguar Land Rover May Be Looking to Buy Another Brand

It’s been almost a decade since India’s Tata Motors acquired Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. In that time, Tata has poured a tremendous amount of money into updating both brands. But now it might be time for Jaguar Land Rover to grow, perhaps adding a third luxury brand to the group.

Bloomberg reports that JLR is currently on the hunt for another brand. It’s reportedly looking for brands that “fit with its current portfolio,” although it may also purchase a technology company to give it a leg up building electric vehicles. JLR’s parent company, Tata Motors, allegedly believes that it needs to expand in order to stay competitive. At the moment, though, it appears no decision has been made.

But if JLR actually does decide to expand the number of brands it owns, which ones would it potentially buy? At the moment, the only brands that are rumored to be available are Alfa Romeo and Maserati. If JLR isn’t interested in both of those brands, since they’ll presumably be sold off together if they’re sold at all, the list of other brands that may be available is pretty short. Maybe Lincoln or Buick? Perhaps Aston Martin?

Then again, considering that Bloomberg reports Tata has at least $6 billion in cash reserves, it might be able to buy a brand we never see coming. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what JLR decides to do.
