Nearly 500,000 Ram Trucks Recalled Over Fire Risk

Normally, when there’s a recall for a vehicle that’s at risk of an engine fire, it’s something fairly exotic. Ferraris have a particular proclivity for setting themselves on fire, but Lamborghini definitely isn’t immune, nor was the Porsche 911 GT3. But thanks to a potentially faulty water pump, the latest vehicles recalled over an engine fire risk are a little more pedestrian—Ram pickup trucks.

Fiat Chrysler announced this week that it’s recalling an estimated 494,417 medium-duty and heavy-duty Ram pickup trucks around the world over concerns that some water pumps may overheat, potentially causing a fire in the engine compartment. Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups built between 2013 and 2017 are affected, as well as 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs built over the same period. FCA says the recall is limited to trucks equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6 engines but that it no longer uses the potentially faulty water pump. Of the nearly 500,000 trucks being recalled, 443,712 units are in the U.S., while 46,220 are in Canada and another 4,485 are located outside the NAFTA region.

Thankfully, FCA says there are no injuries it’s aware of at this time. But if you own one of the affected vehicles, please take it to your dealer as soon as possible to have your water pump inspected and possibly replaced. Engine fires are no joke.
