On this episode of Head 2 Head, hosts Jonny Lieberman and Randy Pobst compare the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder to find out which one is the better convertible sports car.
On paper, the cars are fairly close. Both start around $175,000, have all-wheel drive and seven-speed dual-clutch automatics, and make 540 hp. But how they make that power is one area where they differ. The 911 Turbo packs a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six that produces massive torque down low but comes with some turbo lag, while the R8 is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 that has no lag but makes peak power and torque much higher than the Porsche. The hosts first take the drop-tops on some canyon roads to see how they do in the real world.
The 911 is the more comfortable of the two, with its plush leather seating and roomier cabin. It drives nice, too, but is kind of forgettable, according to the hosts. The R8, on the other hand, offers an addictive soundtrack from its V-10 engine in addition to its exotic looks and sharp handling. Though these variants are intended more for cruising down the boulevard or up the coast that carving up road courses, Pobst and Lieberman still insist on taking them to the track. Though they have similar specs, their lap times are pretty far apart. But the fastest car on the track isn’t necessarily the one you’d want to take to the beach. Find out which topless sports car they like best in the full episode below.
