Refreshing or Revolting: 2018 Ferrari Portofino

The 2018 Ferrari Portofino replaces the California T as the Italian automaker’s new entry-level vehicle and it rides on a new platform that’s lighter than before. Under the hood is the same twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 from the California but tuned to 591 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. Like the California T, the Portofino features a retractable hardtop that’s stowed in the trunk; however, unlike its predecessor, the Portofino looks sleeker and more aggressive.

Up front you’ll immediately notice the aggressive fascia that features Ferrari’s corporate headlight design and a wide lower air intake, giving it a more imposing appearance than the California T, which has a less angular front end. From the side, the Portofino has a more muscular profile with its large rear haunches and is in full display with the roof stowed. The Portofino’s retractable hardtop also flows with the car’s lines to give it a more cohesive look compared to the California T, especially when viewed from the side.

Out back, the Portofino continues with a more aggressive design thanks to its quad exhaust tips and a rear diffuser that looks like its protruding out of the bumper slightly. Its taillights are similar to the ones found on the California T; however, the Portofino’s taillights aren’t surrounded by bodywork and appear more three-dimensional.

Inside, the Portofino’s cabin looks similar to other newer Ferrari models we’ve seen, with a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen as the center piece. There are also two multi-information displays flanking the larger tachometer and a smaller screen positioned right in front of the front passenger seat. Ferrari also updated the buttons and knobs on the Portofino, putting it in line with the rest of the automaker’s lineup. The air vents’ shape and position, however, remain similar to the California T.
