In the world of heavy-duty pickup trucks, every automaker wants to be able to claim its truck can tow the most stuff. For 2018, that truck is the Ford F-Series Super Duty. Thanks to an increased towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, Ford says its truck can now tow a whopping 34,000 pounds. The upgraded Super Duty can also tow up to 21,000 pounds with a conventional hitch and has a payload capacity of 7,360 pounds.
“Super Duty customers expect the best, and for 2018 we’re giving our customers even more power and torque from our 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel – delivering the most horsepower and torque available among all heavy-duty pickups,” said Todd Eckert, Ford’s head of truck marketing. “Plus, our new F-450 pickup now includes a 4X2 model, enabling our customers to get more done with the segment’s best payload and towing.”
Under the hood, the 6.7-liter diesel engine has been upgraded to now make 450 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque. That’s an increase of 10 hp and 10 lb-ft compared to the 2017 version. To achieve those gains, Ford redesigned the cylinder heads, then recalibrated the fuel and turbo boost. Ford hasn’t said what kind of fuel economy the engine gets while towing the aforementioned 34,000 pounds, but we suspect it’s in the single digits.
Look for the 2018 Super Duty F-450 4×2 to arrive on dealer lots later this winter with a base price of $52,830.
