Late last year, General Motors launched Marketplace, an app integrated into the multimedia systems of certain vehicles. It allows you to purchase food and other goods and services straight from your touchscreen. Now, on certain Chevrolet vehicles with Marketplace, you can pay for gas at Shell stations without having to get out of your car.
To use the feature, drivers will click on the Marketplace app on their car’s touchscreen, and then press the Shell icon. Drivers will be able to select the specific Shell station where they want to refuel. Then, the touchscreen will spit out a code that drivers can use when they arrive at the station to activate their desired pump. The charges will be added to the driver’s payment method on file.
In addition to helping drivers find and pay for gas, the Marketplace app also allows drivers to make dinner reservations, find hotels, and pay for parking. It also has a “Shop” section that offers deals specific to their vehicles, such as discounts for oil changes or deals on GM accessories.
Chevrolet is piloting the Shell feature in select markets right now. In the coming months, Chevrolet will make it available nationwide in eligible Chevrolet vehicles from the 2017 model year or later.
GM isn’t the only automaker to let you pay for gas on your touchscreen. Jaguar is also rolling out the feature, which lets you pay with Apple Pay, Android Pay, or PayPal.
