Earlier this year, Ford announced the Mustang GT500 will arrive in 2019 and make more than 700 hp. But while it will be the most powerful production car Ford has ever sold, it won’t actually be the most powerful Ford ever. That honor goes to the recently announced track-only 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet.
Teased in the image above, Ford says the Cobra Jet’s supercharged 5.2-liter version of the Coyote V-8 will make it “the most powerful and quickest version from the factory yet.” We don’t know what that means in terms of horsepower, but the Cobra Jet will reportedly run the quarter mile in the mid-8-second range with a trap speed that exceeds 150 mph. For comparison, the quickest road car we’ve ever tested, the Tesla Model S P100 D, ran the quarter in 10.5 seconds.
To turn the Mustang into a factory drag racer, Ford Performance added a track-optimized four-link rear suspension, a 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering, a roll cage, racing seats, custom coil-overs, and custom wheels from Weld Racing. It also comes with a graphics package and commemorative badging in honor of the Cobra Jet’s 50th anniversary. As a nod to the 1968 original, only 68 Cobra Jets will be produced for 2018.
When it goes on sale, Ford says the Cobra Jet will be eligible to enter National Hot Rod Association competitions, as well as multiple National Mustang Racers Association and National Muscle Car Association classes. Pricing and final specs won’t be released until this summer, but considering the 2014 version cost almost $100,000, it’s probably safe to assume the 2018 will be a six-figure car.
