Although the 641-hp McLaren 650S coupe and Spider have enough performance to satisfy most enthusiasts, the British race team turned sports car-maker has introduced a limited-run of cars for drivers who want more. The McLaren 675LT Coupe features a demonic 666-hp as well as aerodynamic and suspension upgrades. On this episode of Ignition, host Jonny Lieberman and professional racer Randy Pobst drive a pair of track-focused 675LTs on the street and track.
With two McLaren 675LT coupes in possession, Lieberman says the hardest choice is choosing between red and green. Power for the 675LT comes from the automaker’s twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 making 666 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque (up from 641 hp and 500 lb-ft in the 650S) with power routed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While LT in McLaren speak means Long Tail, the 675LT’s 1 inch of additional length comes from a more aggressive front splitter. A 50-percent larger active rear spoiler however provides more downforce or air braking performance depending on position. The 666-hp McLaren 675LT weighs just 2,993 pounds.
After some deliberation, Lieberman hops into the red car for some canyon carving. At an as-tested price of $399,271 (base price is $353,600), Lieberman questions whether the 675LT is worth around $150,000 more than the 650S. In order to figure out if it’s worth the premium, Pobst takes the green car (with the carbon fiber roof) to the track.
