Motor Trend has done countless comparisons between the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. With the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro being named our 2016 Car of the Year, we decided to pit the V-8-powered SS against the BMW M4 coupe. On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman and Jason Cammisa compare the American muscle car against the renowned German sports coupe.
Power for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS comes from GM’s most advanced small block V-8 to date: the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 making 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. The BMW M4 is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 making 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. Both test cars feature a six-speed manual transmission. At the drag strip, the sixth-generation Camaro SS and BMW M4 put down nearly identical numbers (0-60 mph: 4.1 sec and 4.2 sec; quarter-mile: 12.4 sec @ 115.8 mph and 12.5 sec @ 116.5 mph, respectively).
Both cars lap the figure-eight in 24.1 seconds, with the Camaro holding 0.83 g on average, and the M4 recording 0.82 g average.The Chevy stops from 60 mph in just 102 feet compared to 108 feet for the Bimmer. At 3,696 pounds, the Camaro is 184 pounds heavier than the M4.
While the official test numbers are nearly identical, impromptu stop-light-style drag races reveal the Camaro SS to be more consistent in straight-line acceleration. The BMW, however, is much easier to drift around the skidpad.
Next, professional racer Randy Pobst shares his thoughts as he races them around the track at Streets of Willow. Despite different engine and chassis behavior, the two cars lap the 1.6-mile course just 0.21 seconds apart. At 1:23.15, the Camaro SS was slightly behind the BMW M4’s 1:22.94 lap time.
With the two cars posting eerily similar numbers in nearly all metrics, Lieberman and Cammisa take the two cars to the canyon roads to discuss the merits of both cars, including the $35,000 price difference. As tested, the Camaro SS is priced at $46,095 compared to $81,045 for the M4.
