A new report from Auto Express has hinted that Renault’s Alpine brand could source its engines from Mercedes-AMG thanks to a tech-sharing agreement between Renault-Nissan and Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company. Alpine will be officially revived when the production version of the Alpine Vision concept arrives later this year.
Bruno Ancelin, Renault’s executive vice president, suggested that Alpine could look to Mercedes technology to power its vehicles. “We have to reduce the diversity of the engines we will use [across Renaultsport and Alpine], which is not against Alpine having a lineup of high-power engines,” said Ancelin. “We have two solutions. Either we take one that is available in the Alliance and we fine tune it for more power. Or we can buy on the market. I heard in the presentation of the new DB11 from Aston Martin they are buying their V-8s from AMG. That is possible, too. We have some cooperation with Daimler. We can buy engines on the market – there is no problem to share that.”
Mercedes’ new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6, which is used in AMG 43 vehicles, could be a good fit for Alpine’s larger cars and could follow after the production version of the Alpine Vision concept arrives with a turbocharged four-cylinder. Regarding what other vehicle types will be expected in Alpine’s future lineup, Ancelin said that it could have “everything that is usably in a sporty brand,” which includes coupes, convertibles, and hatchbacks.
