Jaguar Will Offer Wagons in the Future, Just Not an XE Sportbrake

Last week we reported that Jaguar won’t offer another wagon anytime in the near future due to lack of demand for the body style.  However, Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design chief has cleared things up on Twitter, stating that he was misquoted by Automotive News. Callum then told the world of social media that Jaguar will have wagons in its lineup, just not an XE Sportbrake.

In the U.S., wagons have a small but dedicated following because they offer plenty of utility without sacrificing handling and/or fuel economy might. However, due to the increasing popularity of crossover and SUVs, wagons are becoming a niche segment in North America, making them harder to sell in big numbers. Elsewhere in the world, wagons are more widespread and remain the go to family-oriented vehicle, especially in Europe.

Jaguar has introduced two wagons in the past, stretching the older X-Type and most recently the XF Sportbrake. The X-Type was sold in the U.S. from 2004 to 2009, whereas the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, which was on sale from 2012 to 2015, never made it to America. If Callum’s Twitter post is anything to go on, we can expect a wagon version of the new Jaguar XF at some point down the line.

Nonetheless, Jaguar is currently betting on crossovers for increasing sales and its new F-Pace is expected to be its best seller.
