It’s going to be another record-breaking year for travel this Fourth of July holiday, according to AAA.
With 44.2 million Americans expected to venture at least 50 miles away from home, this upcoming weekend is poised to become the most traveled July 4th holiday ever. An additional 1.25 million travelers will make it out this year compared to last year.
The vast majority of travelers will drive to their holiday destination. An estimated 37.5 million Americans will hit the road, an increase of 2.9 percent from last year. About 3.44 million will fly, while the remaining 3.27 million will use other forms of transportation including trains, buses, and cruises. AAA defines the holiday weekend as starting Friday, June 30 and ending Tuesday, July 4.
Fortunately for those who choose to drive, gas prices are very low heading into the holiday weekend. As of June 27, AAA pegged the national average at $2.25 a gallon, and even California managed to stay below the $3 mark at $2.95. Prices could rise a bit closer to the holiday weekend, however.
The most-visited destination this summer will be Orlando, Florida, AAA estimates based on its travel bookings. Rounding out the top 10 in order are Vancouver, Canada; Cancun, Mexico; Seattle, Washington; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Honolulu, Hawaii; Anaheim, California; Anchorage, Alaska; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Montego Bay, Jamaica.
