There has been no shortage of next-gen Jeep Wrangler four-door Unlimited test mules, but we haven’t seen much of the two-door variant. That changes today, with the first shots of the two-door since the JL began testing in production bodywork.
Besides having two fewer doors, the SUV doesn’t look that much different from the four-door prototypes we’ve been seeing for months now. We can see the redesigned headlamps peeking through the camo and can just barely make out the outline of the LED daytime running lights on the front fenders. Under the camo, the front end should also feature notches for the headlights in the outer grille slats and a front bumper similar to that of the Recon and Hard Rock. We can also see the two-door Wrangler will again be offered in both hard- and soft-top roof styles.
The JL Wrangler is expected to ride on a new chassis and use lightweight materials in the body, including some aluminum. In addition to two- and four-door Wrangler SUVs, a pickup truck variant is also in the works, and is said to debut a year after the standard Wrangler. Engine options should include a new turbocharged 2.0-liter “Hurricane” four-cylinder, 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, and a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6. A plug-in hybrid drivetrain has also been rumored.
Expect the 2018 Jeep Wrangler to debut soon and enter production in the fourth quarter of this year.
