BMW i8 Roadster Teased in New Video

When BMW introduced the i8 back in 2014, we called it a masterpiece. With its performance-hybrid powertrain and carbon-fiber construction, the i8 took ultra-exclusive hybrid hypercar technology and offered it at a price a regular person could maybe, possibly afford one day. Sadly, while the futuristic supercar was originally supposed to offer a convertible version alongside the coupe, engineering issues forced BMW to put a pin in that idea.

Solving those problems may have taken several more years, but eventually, BMW confirmed that the i8 Roadster would arrive in 2018. It’ll most likely debut at the LA Auto Show, but based on the spy shots we’ve seen, there isn’t much left to do. The i8 Roadster looks pretty darn production-ready.

The big question, though, is going to be what kind of updates accompany the now-removable roof. We’ve heard rumors that the i8 Roadster will get a bigger battery, bumping up to a 10-kWh pack that will improve its all-electric range. It may also get more power, potentially making 372 hp instead of its current 357 hp.

Sadly, the teaser below doesn’t reveal any extra information other than confirming the i8 Roadster’s name. But it does get us excited about the upcoming drop-top supercar of the future.
