Compared to what it was in the 1990s, Mitsubishi’s automotive lineup is a shadow of its former self. Here in the U.S. it only sells the Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Mirage. Oh, and technically it still sells a few Lancers each month, too. But today, the Japanese automaker announced a three-year plan to sell more cars, and it basically boils down to offering more vehicles.
Mitsubishi says its goal is to increase both sales and revenues by 30 percent over the next three years. To do that, it plans to introduce several new models, as well as refresh its current models to make them more competitive. Specifically, Mitsubishi will introduce 11 new vehicles over the next, six of which will be all-new.
But if you were hoping for the 3000GT to make a comeback, we have some bad news. This plan is almost entirely focused on SUVs and other utility vehicles. Instead of a new sports car, that means we’ll see crossovers like the Eclipse Cross (shown above).
It also sounds like Japan, China, and Southeast Asia will be where Mitsubishi focuses the majority of its efforts. So the U.S. probably won’t even see all those new models. That said, it plans to sell a lot more of its cars here. By 2019, Mitsubishi hopes it will be able to move 130,000 vehicles a year.
