Two years ago, Mazda wowed the world with the RX-Vision concept. With a long dash-to-axle ratio and simple flowing lines, the RX-Vision was everything we wanted from a future rotary-powered sports car. This year, ahead of its big reveal at the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda has revealed a new concept that picks up where the RX-Vision left off.
Called the Vision Coupe, Mazda’s latest concept isn’t a coupe at all. It’s a sporty-looking sedan with a coupe-like roofline. But, much like with the Aston Martin Rapide, most people won’t notice the rear doors at first glance. That’s not necessarily good for rear headroom, but it helps ensure the Vision Coupe looks absolutely stunning. There’s still a lot of RX-Vision in the design of the Vision Coupe, with hard lines passed over in favor of gentle curves. And while it’s still recognizable as a Mazda, especially from the front end, the design language has clearly evolved.
We particularly like the Vision Coupe’s long hood, sloping roofline, and quad exhausts. If this is the starting point for Mazda’s next sedan, it will make for one heck of a good-looking car. We’d gladly drive a Vision Coupe-inspired Mazda6, but the size of this concept suggests Mazda might have something a little larger in mind. Could Mazda be considering a big, premium sedan like the old Millenia? We certainly wouldn’t put it past the product planners.
Unfortunately, while Mazda calls this “a next-generation design vision model,” there’s no way to tell how or when the Vision Coupe’s design elements will show up in production cars. And if the RX-Vision concept is an example, we could be waiting quite a few more years.
