2019 Ford Edge ST Gets Sport Mode With Rev-Matching Feature

Ford wants in on the rising trend of performance SUVs, so it will roll out the new Edge ST this summer. Before it arrives on the market, Ford is previewing the model’s Sport mode feature.

Integrated into the Edge’s rotary gear shifter, the Sport mode button activates sharper throttle programming and engine braking for a more responsive driving experience. It can hold lower gears when cornering, and rev-matching helps raise engine speed for quick downshifts. When drivers activate that “S” button, they’ll enjoy a louder exhaust note, and a tachometer automatically appears in the digital instrument cluster to help measure their performance.

The 2019 Ford Edge ST features a 2.7-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine with 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. That’s ahead of the 250 hp and 275 lb-ft provided by other Edges with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine.

Other upgrades on the Edge ST include fully manual paddle shifters, a stiffer suspension, larger vented rear rotors, and an optional performance brake package. This package provides improved friction materials and ventilation for the front rotors. Twenty-inch wheels are standard, but the performance pack bring along 21-inch wheels with summer performance tires. There are a number of cosmetic changes, too, including a wider grille with improved cooling, deep side skirts, and dual-exhaust outlets.

Introducing the Edge ST is just one step Ford is taking to revamp its lineup away from sedans and in favor of trucks and SUVs. The automaker announced last year that it would reallocate $7 billion of capital in this direction. The Edge ST is just the tip of the iceberg, as Ford is also planning a new Bronco, Ranger, and an Escape-sized off-road SUV.
