The Next-Gen 2020 Ford Escape Debuts April 2

Ford introduced the latest-generation Escape for the 2013 model year, so the compact crossover is a bit overdue for a full redesign. Fortunately, the automaker promises to unveil a new version on April 2.

On Twitter, Ford released a teaser video to whet our appetites. We can see the crossover gets a completely redesigned grille, which looks less hexagonal than the current model’s. In the rear, there are new taillights and large “Escape” lettering in the space connecting the two. Previously, the Escape badge was smaller and placed below the left taillight.

The Escape is Ford’s second best-selling vehicle in the U.S., bowing only to the almighty F-Series. So needless to say, there’s a lot riding on its success. Last year, Ford sold 272,228 copies of the Escape, down 11.7 percent from the prior year, but it was still enough to beat the Explorer at 227,732 copies.

The 2020 Ford Escape will sit on a new front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Lincoln Corsair small crossover, which will debut on April 17. The architecture is shared with the not-for-U.S. Ford Focus, and will also be used on the next-generation EcoSport and a new small crossover inspired by the Bronco SUV. Ford hasn’t announced powertrain options for the new Escape, but we know a hybrid version is coming.
