3 Reasons Why the Ram Power Wagon Is My Favorite City Car

It should come as no surprise that the MotorTrend Garage 2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon is pretty much unstoppable off-road. I mean, with mud-slinging tires, 14.3 inches of running ground clearance, locking front and rear differentials, and a winch, it’s quite possibly one of the most capable off-road wheeled vehicles on the road this side of an Oshkosh JLTV. But the weird thing is, as big and unwieldy as it may seem, our Ram Power Wagon is one of the best—if not most ridiculous—city cars I’ve ever driven. Here are some reasons why:

People Move Out of My Way

At nearly 20 feet long and just under four tons, the Power Wagon dwarfs most vehicles I share Los Angeles roads with. Some might think of this as a disadvantage when it comes to parallel parking (which, in a surprise to me, has been shockingly easy over the past 12 months), but it’s a huge advantage when it comes to driving in gridlocked traffic. Simply put, when I want to change lanes, usually all it takes is activating a turn signal, and a space magically opens up in the lane next to me. I wouldn’t want to be hit by the Power Wagon’s steel bumpers, either.

I Can See Everything

The Ram’s exceptional ground clearance is a huge plus off-road, but it really helps on-road, too. Sitting that high makes it easier for me to anticipate traffic, avoid bottlenecks ahead, and, most important, see people do weird, terrible things in their cars around me—like the Prius driver eating a full meal with a knife and fork, or the Tahoe driver who placed her phone over her instrument cluster and was watching Netflix.

What Potholes?

I love driving sporty cars around L.A. because their superior handling makes it easier to dodge those last-second potholes and avoid a blowout. I don’t have that problem with the Power Wagon. With its off-road-tuned suspension and meaty sidewalls on its 33-inch tires, I can just plow right over potholes without even noticing it. Instead of swerving around potholes, I can stay safely in my lane without worrying about what’s going on beneath me.
